After the visit of Chichen Itza, we head to the cenote Ik-kil, located 3 km away from the site.

Then we head to the gorgeous colonial town of Izamal, entirely painted in bright yellow. The Franciscan convent San Antonio de Padua was build on top of a Mayan ceremonial center, and is the continent’s largest cloister.

During the seventeenth century, the fibers of this plant were used for many things : ropes for the Spanish caravels, baskets… Its production made Merida a grand and rich town. It was called Yucatan’s green gold.

Visit of the Hacienda and explanation of the production process from the 1900s. We will then visit the fields on a small trolley pulled by a horse. Finally, we go swimming in a cenote on the property of the Hacienda (don’t forget your towel and swimsuit).

After breakfast we suggest that you discover the archaeological site of Kabah, which belongs to the well-known Ruta Puuc (composed of the sites of Kabah, Labna, Sayil and Uxmal). In Yucatec Mayan language the word Puuc means "mountain" and refers to a range of low hills that cross the region. These sites are all the more enjoyable that they are not widely visited by tourists.

This magnificient colonial town conserved its city walls and fortification and was declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999. Many canons still recall the assaults the pirates of the Caribbean launched on the town during colonization.

Conquer the city of Uxmal

The site is peaceful and not widely visited by tourists… You will love it ! Uxmal, in Mayan language, means “Thrice Built”, but in reality the city was constructed five times. The water is really scarce in the region, this explains the omnipresence of representations of the rain god Chac-Mool.

Then we head to the hacienda Temozon, where we will spend the night.

Tour cenote off the beaten tracks

Cenotes are natural pools of fresh and crystalline water, where the sunrays create spectacular lighting effects. On the way we cross a typical Mayan market where the colors of fruits and vegetables are matched only by those of the women’s traditional clothing. Then we explore 2 cenotes, and take a refreshing swim in the forest. One thing is certain, you will leave completely transformed.

Then we head back to Merida. Visit of the capital city of Yucatan. While enjoying economical growth, Merida kept a captivating colonial charm and a strong personality. You will find many well set off historical monuments, and pleasant little squares are a great setting to have a drink while listening to a marimba-playing band.

The handicrafts market offers numerous souvenirs like the renowned huipils (very colorful embroidered woman tunics), the authentic "Panama" hats, the true Yucatecan all-cotton hammocks and many more.

This peaceful town, built in the sixteenth century by Francisco de Montejo, is dominated by the imposing sobriety of the Franciscan convent San Bernardino de Siena. You will appreciate the pretty pastel colored houses, while eating an ice cream.

Then we head to Coba, one of the largest mayan city. Its ruins have remained essentially intact in the middle of the tropical jungle. The archaeologists brought to light a 42 meters (138 feet) high pyramid, a 9-storey high palace, a ball court and the most extended network of large calk cobbled roads ("sacbé") ever discovered.

Then road to the Caribbean Coast with its endless beaches and its turquoise waters hosting the 2nd largest coral reef in the world. We arrive in Tulum. We visit Tulum’s archaeological site, which witnessed the arrival of the first colonists, in 1518, as the Spanish conquistador Juan de Grijalva set foot on the beach, under the stunned eye of Batab (Mayan governor of the time).
