Yucatan Express

The Yucatan Peninsula is fringed by wonderful beaches with crystalline waters. It is the land of the Maya. The land of thick jungle and sisal fields as far as our eyes can see. A flat and water-thirsty land, where cane toads can be heard at night.

Then we stop in Valladolid, a small and authentic Mexican town that is lovely to stroll around. This peaceful town, built in the sixteenth century by Francisco de Montejo, is dominated by the imposing sobriety of the Franciscan convent San Bernardino de Siena.

Chichen Itza, mayan wonder

After lunch we head to Chichen Itza. Built by the Maya, and then reorganized by the Toltecs, Chichen Itza symbolizes the unification of both religious cultures. The site, which at its height was the most important religious center of the peninsula, is the largest archaeological site in Yucatan.

At the end of the day, arrival in Merida where we will spend the night.

Merida, the capital city of Yucatan. While enjoying economical growth, Merida kept a captivating colonial charm and a strong personality. You will find many well set off historical monuments, and pleasant little squares are a great setting to have a drink while listening to a marimba-playing band.

On the way we cross a typical Mayan market where the colors of fruits and vegetables are matched only by those of the women’s traditional clothing. Then we explore 2 cenotes, and take a refreshing swim in the forest. One thing is certain, you will leave completely transformed.

Conquer the city of Uxmal

The site is peaceful and not widely visited by tourists… You will love it ! Uxmal, in Mayan language, means “Thrice Built”, but in reality the city was constructed five times. The water is really scarce in the region, this explains the omnipresence of representations of the rain god Chac-Mool.

The Haciendas and Yucatan’s green gold

Then we head to the hacienda Sotuta de Peon. True living museum, Sotuta de Peon is the last Mexican hacienda where henequen (or Sisal) is still produced. During the seventeenth century, the fibers of this plant were used for many things : ropes for the Spanish caravels, baskets… Its production made Merida a grand and rich town. It was called Yucatan’s green gold.

Visit of the Hacienda and explanation of the production process from the 1900s. We will then visit the fields on a small trolley pulled by a horse. Finally, we go swimming in a cenote on the property of the Hacienda (don’t forget your towel and swimsuit).

Then we head to the gorgeous colonial town of Izamal, entirely painted in bright yellow. The Franciscan convent San Antonio de Padua was build on top of a Mayan ceremonial center, and is the continent’s largest cloister.

Then we head to Coba, one of the largest mayan city. Its ruins have remained essentially intact in the middle of the tropical jungle.
