Authentic Chiapas

This tour is perfect if you wish to better discover Mexico, meet its local communities and unspoilt nature. This trip in the Yucatan peninsula and Chiapas will give you a full picture of the mayan world. Visits of sites known worldwide like Chichen Itza or Uxmal are of course planned. But it is in the heart of the jungle that Mexico will reveal its biggest surprises. Its lush forest along the border with Guatemala offers unusual encounters with howler monkeys, toucans, and if you’re lucky maybe even a jaguar. A trip off the beaten tracks that will end with a few days to rest on the Caribbean Sea.

Chichen Itza, mayan wonder

The site, which at its height was the most important religious center of the peninsula, is the largest archaeological site in Yucatan.

Arrival in Merida in the late afternoon.

Merida, the capital city of Yucatan. While enjoying economical growth, Merida kept a captivating colonial charm and a strong personality. You will find many well set off historical monuments, and pleasant little squares are a great setting to have a drink while listening to a marimba-playing band.

Then we explore 2 cenotes, and take a refreshing swim in the forest. One thing is certain, you will leave completely transformed.

Conquer the city of Uxmal

The site is peaceful and not widely visited by tourists… You will love it ! Uxmal, in Mayan language, means “Thrice Built”, but in reality the city was constructed five times. The water is really scarce in the region, this explains the omnipresence of representations of the rain god Chac-Mool.

Then visit of the Loltun Caves. Those are natural reservoirs considered sacred by the ancient Maya and which served as an ancient cult place. Archeologists have found many rock paintings, offerings and cult objects in this maze of stalactites and stalagmites.

Day 5: Campeche - Palenque

This morning we visit Campeche, the city with pastel and harmonious colors which enhance the style of the colonial era. The city was one of the first landing place of the conquerors in 1517. This magnificient colonial town conserved its city walls and fortification and was declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999. Many canons still recall the assaults the pirates of the Caribbean launched on the town during colonization.

At the end of the day, arrival in Palenque, where the coolness of the tropical forest can be felt.

Overnight stay at hotel Villas Kin Ha.
Included : private transport, room & breakfast

Day 6: Palenque - Misol Ha - Agua Azul - San Cristobal de las Casas

After breakfast we head south. All year long, water comes down from the mountains and eventually creates magnificent waterfalls like Misol-Ha or Agua Azul.

For lunch (non-included), we have grilled fish near the water while enjoying a beautiful panorama. We also take the time to go swimming in one of the many pools shaped by the waterfalls.

At the end of the day we head to San Cristobal.

Day 7: San Cristobal de las Casas - San Juan Chamula - Zinacatan - San Cristobal de las Casas

San Cristobal de las Casas is located at the center of an indigenous population area, and is the birthplace of the Zapatist movement, developed under the leadership of Subcomandante Marcos for the protection of the indigenous rights. Every morning, the Tzotzil people sell their products at the market.

Syncretism in Tzotzil community

After breakfast we head to the village of San Juan de Chamula where the inhabitants practice a form of syncretism: a mixture of Christian beliefs and ancestral rituals. Then we head to Zinacantan where a Tzotzil family invites us into their house and shares with us their customs and traditions (weaving), as well as a glass of pox (corn-based liquor) and handmade tortillas.

Return in the late afternoon to San Cristobal.

Then we head to the majestic site of Bonampak. The site, discovered in the middle of the jungle in 1946, features gorgeous and incredibly well preserved frescos depicting wild fight scenes, on the inside walls of the temples. Part of the entrance fee goes to the Lacandon indigenous community, supposedly the true descendants of the Maya.

Then we head to Lacanja.

Day 10: Lacadon Jungle - Yaxchilan - Palenque

Explore the majestic Yaxchilan
In the morning we visit the archeological site of Yaxchilan (‘Green Stones’ in Mayan language), which is probably the most beautiful Mayan archeological site of all of Mexico. It was an important center during the Classic Era and a dominating power in the area. Yaxchilan was for a long time allied to Tikal and rival to Palenque.

We reach the site paddling down the Usumacinta River on a pirogue (45 minutes). Discovery of the site in a “first exploration” atmosphere, among many howler monkeys and toucans.

We go for a 2-hour walk between Mayan temples and stelae.

Then we head to Palenque.

Overnight stay at hotel Villas Kin Ha.

Day 11: Palenque - Chicanna

Explore the city of Palenque

In the morning, visit of the archaeological site of Palenque. It might well be the most magical site of Mexico. It gives the impression to penetrate a deep, mysterious and secret place, of a light and delicate architecture. At the heart of the Inscriptions Temple stands the crypt of King Pakal, discovered in 1952. It still contained the remains of the powerful monarch, covered with jewels and a mortuary mask made of jade mosaic. The surrounding jungle and the buried ruins create a fascinating scenery and we can easily imagine the magnificence of the place, back when the temples and the palace were still covered with polychromes paints and a richly adorned crowd animated the esplanades.

Day 12: Chicanna - Calakmul - Bacalar

Early departure for the archaeological site of Calakmul, located in the state of Campeche, in the heart of a biosphere reserve, home to numerous jaguars. This still quite unknown site is one of the jewels of the Mayan culture and was, at its peak, the direct rival of Tikal (Guatemala). Like in Tikal a few years ago, we can observe wildlife wandering freely on the site (toucans, monkeys, oco pheasant). Jaguars usually prefer to wander at night, but who knows, maybe we'll get lucky.

At the end of the day, arrival in Bacalar, ‘the lake of seven colours’.
